Fort St John plays a major role in the infrastructure of north east British Columbia. Over 62,000 people live and work in the north east BC area within the communities of Taylor, Dawson Creek, Hudson Hope, Tumbler Ridge, Chetwynd, and Fort Nelson. But Fort St John remains the hub of services to the area.
As a hub community, Fort St John’s economy is driven by energy sector industries related to oil & gas, electric power, forestry, farming and more.
Northern Health operates the Fort St John Regional Hospital and Residential Care Facility. The $300+ million dollar complex opened in June 2012 and continues to grow with additions to equipment to meet the needs within the community.
The North Peace Regional Airport, located only minutes from Fort St John’s city center, delivers corporate, industrial and personal air travel with services provided from independent helicopter service and North Cariboo Air to Air Canada, and WestJet.
StatsCan 2016 shows the City of Fort St John’s population of 19,897 and over 28,300 when you include the immediate rural areas. (Census agglomeration - population coverage includes Taylor to Charlie Lake and immediate areas surrounding the boundary of the city of Fort St John).
The industrial footprint of the area includes companies such as Canfor Peace Valley OSB Plant, Spectra Energy Transmission - Taylor Complex/McMahon Plant, Shell’s Groundbirch/Montney natural gas processing plants, Tervita disposal management facility, BC Hydro power generating stations - including SITE C Clean Energy Project along the Peace River which is currently under construction. This area continues to show support for the Liquefied Natural Gas proposals as a part of our continued growth.
